A risk worth taking

THERE'S something strangely satisfying about being right.
Last week's Champion carried a front page story about the future of Ormskirk's former Woolworths store - an exclusive written by yours truly - which West Lancashire Borough Council have now confirmed officially.
It was a risk running it without official confirmation last week, but one that paid off eventually.
I know it sounds silly and a bit News of the World but it really helps having contacts you can trust, even if the flipside is not being able to reveal the names behind the rumours.
Why is Woolworths (deceased) important at all? You might wonder why we - and the other local papers, and the borough council, for that matter - attached so much significance to a disused shop on Aughton Street, but in many ways it's symbolic of how and when Ormskirk joins the rest of the UK in recovering from the recession.
A major retailer putting its money where its mouth isn't is a good thing for the town, which makes it news. West Lancashire Borough Council leaking tantalising clues, but not the owner's identity, didn't help either.
The fact we were first with the story is nice for my portfolio but ultimately irrelevant. What matters is that Ormskirk's been given a major boost of confidence from one of Britain's big names.
